“In the face of all of the anti-LGBTQ laws, it’s more important now than ever to come together as a community against the oppression of LGBTQ students. As a transgender student in a school district with anti-LGBTQ policies, I feel the humiliation and dehumanization of transgender students every day when doing something as simple as using the bathroom. I am signing GLSEN’s Letter to the Next President of the United States because no student should have to walk across campus to use the one gender neutral bathroom at their school, because no student should be alienated by their school for what’s in their pants, and because no student should be treated differently in any way because of who they are or who they love."

Every student should have great schools and great opportunity. Visit www.glsen.org/nextpresident to join GLSEN National Student Council Member Drew in demanding the next President supports LGBTQ students!

All students have the right to participate in school activities and freely express their gender identity, yet GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey found that 18.1% of LGBT students report being prevented from attending a school dance with someone of the same gender and 19.2% of LGBT students report being prevented from wearing clothes of another gender at school. We are ‪#‎GLSENproud‬ Prom King is working to improve those statistics.

As North Carolina finds itself in the middle of a divide, Prom King aims to challenge institutionalized transphobia and gender roles to create safe spaces for LGBTQ youth by understanding their needs and daily challenges.

Obama Says Transgender Students Are Vulnerable And Must Be Protected

Obama said the guidelines he issued last week — which tells schools that transgender students can use the bathroom of their choice — comes after schools asked for guidance from the Department of Education.

“I think it’s part of our obligation as a society to make sure everybody is treated fairly and our kids are all loved and protected,” Obama said Monday.

“It is too easy to lose sight of the actual students in the eye of the current political storm. This guidance serves to re-center their rights and the need to support them in overcoming the severe challenges they can face in the school environment, including harassment, violence and discrimination. Tonight they know that they are not alone in facing those challenges. Indeed, the United States government itself has their backs.”

U.S. Directs Public Schools to Allow Transgender Access to Restrooms

The guidance issued by the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Justice regarding accommodating transgender and gender nonconforming students under Title IX is a crucial component of ensuring that the rights of all students are protected! Read GLSEN’s statement on it here.

“No student should ever have to go through the experience of feeling unwelcome at school or on a college campus,” John B. King Jr., the secretary of the Department of Education, said in a statement. “We must ensure that our young people know that whoever they are or wherever they come from, they have the opportunity to get a great education in an environment free from discrimination, harassment and violence.”

Loretta Lynch: Ending Transgender Discrimination About ‘Fundamental Fairness’

All students - including transgender students - deserve schools that are free from discrimination. We’re ‪#‎GLSENproud‬ of these words from U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch!

“To me, this is really an issue of equality and fundamental fairness and what kind of a society do we want to be…We decided over 200 years ago that we wanted to be an inclusive society, and we wanted to guarantee equal rights for all. For that to mean something, we have to be careful, we have to be vigilant, so that when people, for whatever reason, are either [made to] feel like they’re on the outside — a particular group — or are placed on the outside, that that doesn’t happen. And transgender issues are no different, to me, in that regard.”
