Ally Week Question: How does doing this work with allies enhance your projects and work towards creating change in your school and/or community?
Each year, we select a group of outstanding students from around the country to serve as GLSEN Student Ambassadors. These hard-working and enthusiastic young people help advance our work by sharing their stories and advocating for LGBT issues in K-12 education in all forms of media. Watch this video and meet our nine newest Ambassadors for the 2013-2014 school year!
Ally Week is about identifying and supporting allies to LGBT youth. Why? Because our research shows that when LGBTQ students can identify supportive educators and peers, their school experience is better.
This year, we want to make sure it’s absolutely clear: Ally Week is about learning to be better allies and recruiting more folks to step up to the plate. Whether you’re a lesbian adult working to make schools safer for today’s youth, or a gay student organizing to create safe spaces for your trans* friends, everyone has an opportunity this week to recognize their allyship and take action to become better at it.

One our student ambassadors, Dustin, is getting into YouTube and made a video about coming out. What’s your experience? Are you out at school? Online? Reblog and let us know what coming out was like for you.
These days, I find that I feel greatest urgency not because I myself am a lesbian, but because I am a mother, an education advocate and someone fighting for a brighter future for so many young people who lack the opportunity to thrive.
In a groundbreaking move, Governor Jerry Brown has signed a new law–AB1266–into effect in California that allows transgender youth to use the bathroom in school that corresponds to their gender identity.
Although Fox News hosts thinks transgender rights don’t make sense, saying it’s “an impetus to pander to political correctness,” this new law is a major breakthrough for transgender students like 16-year-old Ashton in Ohio. Watch this video in which Ashton shares his struggles as a transgender student.
Thanks to your generosity, we are expanding our resources for transgender students like Ashton through a student-created grassroots initiative called Transgender Student Rights.
Transgender Student Rights provides an online community of resources to support transgender and gender nonconforming students. With this new partnership, the program will become a recognized vehicle for action, events and community engagement through Facebook, Twitter and other social media, to help students like Ashton who must deal with harassment born out of misunderstanding on a daily basis.
