Making Your GSA Trans & Gender Nonconforming Inclusive: Gender-Neutral Pronouns

Being inclusive means that your student club and its members commit to an ongoing process of education. Your club will need to make an effort to ensure that its activities and advocacy efforts are inclusive of transgender and gender nonconforming people and issues.

Here are a couple of ways to make sure your GSA is affirming and respectful of trans and gender nonconforming students. 

Use Gender-Neutral Pronouns

Some transgender and gender nonconforming people may prefer what are traditionally thought of as female or male pronouns, like “she” or “he,” but others prefer gender-neutral pronouns. Respecting people’s preferred gender pronouns is an important way to be supportive of everyone’s identity.

  • “Zie” (pronounced “z”) is subjective and is used instead of “she” or “he.”
  • “Hir” (pronounced “here”) is both objective and possessive and is used instead of “him,” “his,” “her,” and “hers.”
  • “They,” “them,” and “their” are also gender-neutral and can be used as singular gender-neutral pronouns.

Using “it” to refer to people is offensive and dehumanizing, so make sure to stick with gender-neutral pronouns when appropriate!

Practice Gender-Neutral Pronouns

Plan an activity to allow people to become more fluent with these pronouns. For example, break the group into pairs, have each person get to know the other, and then have each member introduce his/her/hir partner to the group using only gender-neutral pronouns. Remember to gently correct people if they make a mistake.

It may seem like a small gesture, but Associated Students of UNM (ASUNM) President Rachel Williams explained that she sees the amendment as “a big step towards campus-wide inclusiveness for students”, as well as noting how easy it was to create a more inclusive environment just by changing a few words. “It’s about comfort at the end of the day,” she said.

Let’s hope this sparks a greater trend of inclusivity in all schools! Nice job, UNM!

[Gendered] bathrooms in schools also pose difficulty to transgender and gender nonconforming students. GLSEN research shows that nearly two thirds of transgender students avoid school bathrooms because of feeling unsafe or uncomfortable. They risk verbal and physical harassment, no matter which of the two, sex-segregated bathrooms they enter….

The solution here is not a new or radical concept: all schools should have private, gender-neutral bathrooms for any students to use, in the same, normal way that homes have bathrooms for guests to use and many restaurants have bathrooms that are not labeled for the sexes.

Gay history class a first at public S.F. high school

A new college preparatory course at a San Francisco high school will focus on the gay rights movement, the AIDS crisis, the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists, and historic events such as the Stonewall Riot and the legalization of same-sex marriage. The LGBT social studies course at the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts is the first of its kind in San Francisco and a rarity in public high schools across the country. The University of California approved the elective history course earlier this week, meaning it can count toward the list of high school classes required to qualify for admission to the UC system.
