If this is a movement that self-describes as being inclusive, it needs to work a lot harder to decenter the experiences of cisgender people and, instead, amplify the voices of transgender people.
It starts with what we say – and it’s my hope that it ends with everyone, not just cis people, feeling affirmed.

The Black Youth Project posted their findings in a survey they conducted last month with young people of color across the sexuality spectrum based on a simple question: what are their attitudes towards marriage equality and LGBT rights? The answers they received were anything but simple.
Tell us: what do you think can be done to fight “whitewashing” of the LGBT movement?
Only 19% of students learned positive portrayals of LGBT history, people, and events according to GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey, despite the fact that LGBT students in schools with LGBT-inclusive curricula report feeling more connected to their school community and hearing homophobic language less. It’s time to start teaching LGBT history!
Fortunately, honesty is at the core of LGBT history. So is courage and creativity and love. Courage, like transgender pioneer Christine Jorgenson stepping off the plane from Copenhagen and into a mob of 300 reporters and photographers. Creativity, as when Mark Allan Segal disrupted Walter Cronkite’s news broadcast and ultimately changed how the anchorman reported LGBT stories. And love, the kind shared by Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, together for 55 years yet legally married for just the last 10 weeks.
When it opened a year and a half ago, Atlanta’s Center for Civil and Human Rights incorporated the LGBT equality push within its exhibits on racial and gender equality. The museum is now going further, launching the LGBT Institute to not only record gay and trans rights, but help obtain them.

It’s not a video but Unheard Voices is an oral history project on LGBT history. It covers Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, LGBT families, the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, transgender issues, and more. Each story has an MP3, a transcript, and background/supporting materials.

As a young, gay boy growing up in the American South in the pre/early-Internet era, positive examples of LGBT people or queer identity were virtually nonexistent. Not seeing the struggles of LGBT people reflected in my textbooks sent a clear message: the lives and struggles of LGBT people aren’t real or valid enough to merit inclusion in formalized education. These lives aren’t important.
Yet now, we have the power to reach LGBT children early, and assure them that their identities and feelings have a shared history; that even if they feel alone in the world, they are anything but.
