Welcome GLSEN's 2014-2015 Transgender Student Rights Advisory Committee!

GLSEN strongly believes that change should come from the community who is most impacted by an issue. The Transgender Student Rights advisory committee is one way students who are experiencing the issues around gender identity and gender expression can create change first hand, in their schools. The 2013-2014 advisory committee recently chose their successors, and we’re excited to work with the new members throughout the next year as they advise our work and programming around trans issues in schools. The committee consists of ten bright and strong leaders who bring diverse perspectives and experiences around the issues facing trans and gender nonconforming students around the country. Without further adieu, we’d like to introduce you to some of the members of our 2014-2015 Transgender Student Rights advisory committee!

Making Your GSA Trans & Gender Nonconforming Inclusive: Gender-Neutral Pronouns

Being inclusive means that your student club and its members commit to an ongoing process of education. Your club will need to make an effort to ensure that its activities and advocacy efforts are inclusive of transgender and gender nonconforming people and issues.

Here are a couple of ways to make sure your GSA is affirming and respectful of trans and gender nonconforming students. 

Use Gender-Neutral Pronouns

Some transgender and gender nonconforming people may prefer what are traditionally thought of as female or male pronouns, like “she” or “he,” but others prefer gender-neutral pronouns. Respecting people’s preferred gender pronouns is an important way to be supportive of everyone’s identity.

  • “Zie” (pronounced “z”) is subjective and is used instead of “she” or “he.”
  • “Hir” (pronounced “here”) is both objective and possessive and is used instead of “him,” “his,” “her,” and “hers.”
  • “They,” “them,” and “their” are also gender-neutral and can be used as singular gender-neutral pronouns.

Using “it” to refer to people is offensive and dehumanizing, so make sure to stick with gender-neutral pronouns when appropriate!

Practice Gender-Neutral Pronouns

Plan an activity to allow people to become more fluent with these pronouns. For example, break the group into pairs, have each person get to know the other, and then have each member introduce his/her/hir partner to the group using only gender-neutral pronouns. Remember to gently correct people if they make a mistake.

Bullying is a challenge that impacts far too many children and families across the country. With the advent of text-messaging, social media, and social networking, many children find they cannot escape the harassment when they go home at night. It follows them from the moment they wake until the moment they go to sleep.

In United States schools, eight in ten lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students report being verbally harassed because of their sexual orientation, and nearly two-thirds were harassed because of their gender expression. 

That’s why GLSEN supports the Safe Schools Improvement Act and the Student Non-Discrimination Act—two bills that work together to ensure schools nationwide are free of bullying, harassment, and discrimination.

Obama said the guidelines he issued last week — which tells schools that transgender students can use the bathroom of their choice — comes after schools asked for guidance from the Department of Education.

“I think it’s part of our obligation as a society to make sure everybody is treated fairly and our kids are all loved and protected,” Obama said Monday.

Without providing much notice, the Senate Education Committee on Monday night revisited a bill that would require transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their biological sex or to seek special accommodations, such as a unisex bathroom.

With practically no warning, last night the Kentucky Senate Education Committee approved a bill that could ban transgender students from using bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity. We’re horrified that lawmakers want to take away students’ right to be their true selves. Share if you are, too.
