Today, people have dehumanized the LGBT community to something they don’t understand nor recognize. Had students known the suffering that the LGBT community had endured, they would be far less likely to make unknowingly homophobic comments and victimize other students with the slurs of the past.
I’ve finally received permission to announce the big news I’ve been holding in (for the most part) for the last two weeks.
Out of 300+ applicants, I’ve been chosen as one of the twelve GLSEN Ambassadors for the 2014/2015 school year!

As we continue our #GLSENPROUD celebration this Pride Month, today I want to tell you about GLSEN Student Ambassador Matt Shankles, a shining example of how students really can make a difference.
A native of Marion, Iowa, Matt faced his own set of challenges at school when he came out as LGBT. He experienced name-calling, bullying and harassment from his peers simply for being himself.
Matt chose to take action. He looked for ways to change his school climate. He began a Twitter campaign to tweet encouragement to students who had been bullied.
Matt also participated in GLSEN’s Safe Schools Advocacy Summit in Washington where he met with lawmakers to push for the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA) and the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA).
But Matt’s work didn’t stop there. He joined GLSEN’s Student Ambassadors team. He spoke on a cyberbullying panel hosted by Iowa’s Governor. He also went on to testify at a Senate committee hearing in Iowa chaired by Senator Tom Harkin to discuss the need for safer schools.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Senator Harkin introduced an education bill that included provisions from both SSIA and SNDA. We can’t help but believe this was partly made possible because of Matt.
We celebrate students like Matt and others who are working to make their own schools and communities better. These incredible young people continue to inspire and challenge GLSEN to work harder for a better tomorrow for every student in K-12 schools.

Today is Give Out Day, the national LGBTQ day of giving! When you’re thinking of who/what to give, please take a moment to consider GLSEN’s incredible Chapters across the U.S. glsen.org/giveoutday
1. Read the Safe Space Kit (6-12) or Ready Set Respect! (K-5) You’ll find step-by-step instructions on how you can support LGBT students, educate about anti-LGBT bias and advocate for changes in your school.
2. Set expectations that cultivate respect for all in your classroom. When addressing such issues as racist, sexist and other forms of bias-based language and attitudes, be sure to include how you will address homophobic and transphobic speech.
3. Display LGBT-inclusive materials. Let students know your classroom is an inclusive space by hanging up the Safe Space sticker or posters or displaying materials for LGBT History Month or Pride Month.
4. Incorporate LGBT-themed materials into curriculum. Create lesson plans that teach about important LGBT figures and events in classes like history and social studies.
5. Teach about the impact of anti-LGBT bias and behavior. Teach about GLSEN’s Think B4 You Speak campaign, and explain why using anti-gay slurs and other derogatory language is hurtful.
6. Support student participation in a GLSEN action. Encourage your students to participate in national actions like Day of Silence or Ally Week.
7. Participate in No Name-Calling Week. Spend January 20-24 teaching your students about celebrating kindness and ending bullying and name-calling.
8. Support Gay-Straight Alliances. Support the efforts of your school’s existing GSA, or work with students to get one started.
9. Join the GLSEN Educator Network. You’ll receive a monthly newsletter that highlights GLSEN’s resources and provides news on GLSEN research, policy initiatives, youth programs and professional development.
10. Change the game with the GLSEN Sports Project. If you’re a coach or PE teacher, use resources that specifically address LGBT issues in athletic and physical education programs.
