Yea, that happened.
“This is who they are. This isn’t a phase that they are going through at the moment,” the lead author of a study to be published in Psychological Science told BuzzFeed News.
Important, informative, and not at all surprising.
Four years ago today, Degrassi features its first transgender character on “My Body is a Cage.” The two-parter featured actress Jordan Todosey as Adam Torres, a female-to-male trans sophomore in high school. Criticism arose that a trans actor should have been selected over a cis-female actress to play the role, but this groundbreaking episode introduced trans issues for the first time in the show’s thirty years on-air.
With 2012 quickly coming to a close, many will look back over what has happened in these past twelve months and be thankful for what they have. At GLSEN, we are thankful for you.
It has been a great year for GLSEN and the safe schools movement, full of benchmarks and achievements. To give you a sense of some of our successes this year, GLSEN has put together a short montage capturing many of our 2012 highlights. I hope you will take a minute to watch.
Everything we have achieved this past year has been possible because of you. And everything we hope to achieve going forward will be as well.

Jennifer Finney Boylan tells her story of coming out as trans to her conservative, 85-year old mother in this video for The New York Times’ series “Transgender Today”.
“I’m aware that I’ve been aided on my journey not only by the kindness of others, but by some of the societal privileges of race and class and economic status. The rate of violence and murder and unemployment for trans people, especially trans women of color, is intolerable, and it has to change.
I think it’s going to be a long road. But it is my hope, if people come forward and tell their stories, and live their lives with authenticity and dignity, that, just as my mother foretold, love will prevail.
I think of the Paul Simon song sometimes, the one that goes, ‘I believe in the future we will suffer no more. Maybe not in my lifetime, but in yours, I feel sure.’”
