GLSEN is launching a revamped tool, part of our ThinkB4YouSpeak Ad Council campaign, to demonstrate how shockingly often anti-LGBT language is used on Twitter.

The #ThinkB4YouSpeak Twitter Counter shows in real time the number of tweets containing anti-LGBT language, with a live feed showing actual tweets containing “fag,” “dyke” or “so gay.”  

 “Fag” was casually tweeted 14,563 times today.

 “Dyke” was casually tweeted 25,065 times this week.

 “So gay” was casually tweeted 279,540 times in April

Think terms such as “fag” and “that’s so gay” are not being commonly used anymore? Think again.

In fact, a recent study by GLSEN, the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students, found that over half of students reported hearing homophobic remarks often—8 out of 10 LGBT students reported being verbally harassed at school in the last year.

We’ve just released a fascinating Twitter tracker that keeps real-time statistics on the number of times anti-gay slurs are used each day on Twitter. Together we can bring this count down to zero.

Sultana High School is censoring and discriminating against its Gay-Straight Alliance. The Hesperia, CA school is limiting the GSA from using LGBT-inclusive language and participating in activities like GLSEN’s Day of Silence and Ally Week.

Today is the first school day since news broke last week during Spring Break that the ACLU of Southern California sent a letter demanding the school district stop discriminating against the school’s GSA.

Tell them that they are not alone

As they return to school today, the GSA members could face retaliation for their decision to stand up to their school district.

Along with our partners at the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, It Gets Project, and the California-based GSA Network, we want to send a clear message to Sultana High GSA members as they head back to school:

Did you know our Research Department found that Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) have tangible benefits for LGBT students in school? Specifically:

  • The presence of GSAs may help to make schools safer for LGBT students by sending a message that biased language and harassment will not be tolerated.
  • Having a GSA may also make schools more accessible to LGBT students by contributing to a more positive school environment.
  • GSAs may help LGBT students to identify supportive school staff, which has been shown to have a positive impact on their academic achievements and experiences in school.

So a big KUDOS to making your school safer, one GSA meeting at a time!
