WE are Gay Straight Alliance @ University High School.
We started about 2 months ago and we are 45 members strong!
We work to educate, advocate, and support the LGBT (and straight) community in Orlando, Florida!
And we are more than happy to say that more than half of our club members are straight Allies :’)
That’s a great idea! Talking to your administration will be much easier with supportive friends and teachers by your side. Chat with your peers about why you think having a GSA will be helpful in your school, and then get a faculty member to agree to be a sponsor. After, ask your new sponsor to help set up a meeting with the administration to discuss starting a GSA! Hopefully, things will go over smoothly and you can start making changes at your school! Check out our Jump Start Guide for GSAs for more tips: http://www.glsen.org/cgi-bin/iowa/all/library/record/2226.html?state=tools&type=student
I am the president of my school’s Gay-Straight alliance. For ally week, we set up a table in our cafeteria where students could sign a pledge and have their photo taken. We thought that, this being our first year doing ally week, it wouldn’t be all that successful. we were wrong. In just four day, 123 people participated. This is a collage of those photographed.
This is what Washington-Lee High School’s GSA is doing to prepare for the Day of Silence.
What are you doing? Let us know in a reblog or leave a comment on YouTube!
Better yet, make your own video response!
Linda Harvey, an anti-LGBT extremist, said some ridiculous things about Day of Silence and LGBT people. So, naturally we had to fact-check her.
And show off just a small fraction of the powerful, courageous, and world-changing people who are using Day of Silence to take a stand and make a difference.
Whose side are you on?
Happy second day of Ally Week everyone! I hope it’s going well for all those participating. Personally, since my GSA is just getting together right now, I will probably end up celebrating Ally Week with them a little late. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t have some Ally Week blogging fun! So I’ll be posting some little facts and tidbits about allies all this week!
Fun Fact #1: Did you know that the first GSA was the idea of an ally? In 1998, a student of Kevin Jennings (the founder of GLSEN) proposed creating a club to promote LGBT inclusiveness to Mr. Jennings, and suggested it be called a Gay-Straight Alliance because she was straight and he was gay. Now, there are over 4,000 GSAs registered in the country!
Stay tuned for more Ally Fun Facts!
We love facts!
Had a really productive GSA meeting today! Took some photos and videos for ALLY WEEK.
This. Is. Awesome.
I have done the improbable! I have chartered a GSA at my high school!
This is a BIG DEAL! This is a very conservative community, and to prove that, 75% of my peers voted in favor of Gov. Romney in the student mock election.
What is so unbelievable? The vote by the school board was unanimous! :)
Each year, we select a group of outstanding students from around the country to serve as GLSEN Student Ambassadors. These hard-working and enthusiastic young people help advance our work by sharing their stories and advocating for LGBT issues in K-12 education in all forms of media. Watch this video and meet our nine newest Ambassadors for the 2013-2014 school year!

You don’t need to start any network in your state to start a GSA. All you need to do is start a GSA! If you go to a public school and your school has any student-led clubs, you must be allowed to start a GSA.
We’ve got a Jump Start Guide for GSAs to help you get started. And if you have any questions, reach out to us! You can message us here or send an email to jdinicola@glsen.org and Juliann will hook you up!
