Safe spaces and supportive schools matter for LGBT youth. We love this story from GLSEN National Student Council Member, Val!
While walking down her school’s hallway, [Val] saw a GLSEN Safe Space sticker stuck to her social worker’s door. “When I saw the sticker that said this is a safe space, it was like a sign that this was my time to be open about who I was,” she said.

What is the LGBTQ-Friendly Online College Fair?
The LGBTQ-Friendly Online College Fair is a collaboration between GLSEN and Campus Pride to help LGBTQ students find colleges that will affirm and respect them, no matter how they identify. We know how important it is for LGBTQ students to feel safe and supported at school, and we also know that not everyone has the means to visit a plethora of college campuses in person to find the right one for them. Through the Online College Fair, students can chat live with representatives from different schools and get a chance to follow up with the schools they liked – all from the comfort and convenience of their own computers. Plus, it’s completely free for students.
Who will be there?
Representatives from 50 colleges (see the full list here) will be standing by to answer your questions, plus moderators from GLSEN, Point Foundation and Campus Pride!
Why should I sign up?
The LGBTQ-Friendly Online College Fair is a space where LGBTQ students can feel comfortable bringing their full selves into the college search process. Campus Pride has a long history of creating college fairs where LGBTQ youth feel safe bringing up LGBTQ issues and needs as they look for a school that’s right for them. The online format of this fair gives you access to tons of college representatives who are prepared to answer questions about LGBTQ issues on their college campuses, without the need to travel long distances.
What happens when it’s over?
First, we hope you’ll come away with a stronger sense of what colleges might be right for you! You’ll also be able to access any notes you take during your chats with college reps, as well as request additional information or follow-up conversations with any colleges you like.

We’re giving everyone a look behind the curtain as we head toward the 2015 GLSEN Respect Awards on June 1st.
Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden and a lifelong educator, provided brief remarks at the 2009 GLSEN Respect Awards, which was held at Gotham Hall in New York. Dr. Biden has a long history of working with and advocating for youth, and she continues to work to raise awareness on education, military families, and women’s health issues.
Dr. Biden has been an educator for the past 28 years and continues to teach English classes at a DC-area community college. Prior to moving to Washington, Dr. Biden taught English full-time at Delaware Technical and Community College for 15 years. Before that, she taught for 13 years in public schools as a reading specialist and English teacher, as well as working part-time with the Rockford Psychiatric Hospital Adolescent Program.
The GLSEN Respect Awards recognize individual and corporate leaders who have helped propel GLSEN’s efforts to ensure safe schools for all of America’s students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.
The 2015 GLSEN Respect Awards will be held in New York on Monday, June 1st, and we’ll be honoring Matthew Morrison of “Glee” with our “Inspiration Award.”
Before we get there though, we wanted to take a look back at some of our favorite moments from past Respect Awards.
In this clip from the 2013 GLSEN Respect Awards in Los Angeles, Laila Al-Shamma gives an amazing speech as she accepts the “Student Advocate of the Year” Award. The award honors one high school student in the U.S. each year, who has both served as a voice of change and made their campus a safer and more inclusive place.
