I haven’t really posted any personal things on this blog in awhile except for when I rant and let out fumes but I guess this is a rather “important” chapter of my life haha. So for those who don’t know, my school just recently re-formed it’s GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) club. Long story short: there was one made when I was a freshman but got “disbanded” due to the lack of members and other issues, but now Junior year (2013) it has been REVIVED! :)
Anyways I’m co-president with my good friend Annie and I’m really happy with the way things have progressed so far. While it was rather sudden/abrupt having “re-started” the club literally in the middle of the school year (4 months before school ends) i’m REALLY glad we did. Not only do we have a nice amount of members showing up to the meetings/participating in the events but the club itself is making a lot of progress ESPECIALLY considering how we just started from scratch.
In one month we…
- first and foremost created an environment and support system for the LGBT community that I would have never expected in a million years. This is clearly visible through our very own Facebook page where all the members are actively voting/posting/supporting the LGBT cause. (And from the good amount of people who show up at the meetings)
- created our very own GSA website (www.gnsgsaclub.tumblr.com) which not only provides notices to GSA events but also LGBT news, support, advice, links to organizations that provide counseling on Long Island (all courtesy of yours truly :P) NOT TO MENTION it has some kick ass features that you should all check out to see (ie. top left dropbar, adventure time scroll up button, etc.)
- created OUR VERY OWN GSA COMMERCIAL currently being broadcasted in our school halls, promoting our club and notifying the student body of when our club meets (thanks to our Secretary Christine)
- had our first Bakesale where we raised OVER $100 (thanks to our Treasurer May for organizing it and everyone in the club for bringing in ALOT of baked goods)
- hosted OUR VERY OWN BUMPER STICKERS CONTEST where we are currently on our 2nd round of voting, this time from the top 3 that were chosen at the last meeting. The bumper sticker that wins will be made into OUR VERY OWN GNS GSA bumper sticker (this is thanks to our Vice President Ji Ann who is hosting the contest and the one who is providing us with the FREE PRODUCTION of bumper stickers and ofc thanks to those who submitted >:) including yours truly again who worked his butt off on 4 designs/submissions :P)
- Scheduled for our first Guest Speaker from LIGALY (an LGBT organization) to speak to us the week after the break about the Day of Silence and the LGBT community
- Had several discussions/informative meetings about the topics of stereotypes, bullying, the purpose of the club, etc. (all accompanied by powerpoint slides with transitions/effects to make it look more presentable)
- Created a “Coffee-house style” environment(or at least still trying to LOL) by providing FOOD/BEVERAGES EVERY MEETING so the members feel relaxed and ready for the weekend (since our meetings are on Fridays) while they just chill and enjoy the meeting
- Have Plans set forth for creating our own Public Service Announcement for GSA right after the break
- continued the selling of our own GSA T-Shirt
and did I mention this was all done in literally a month? :DD and there’s so much more we have planned right now including movie day, day of silence, poster making, visiting Pride for Youth as a club, etc. Really really happy with the way things are going and couldn’t be happier with the board members who are helping me making this club more successful.
but yeah I guess this is just an update on my life for those who care haha :) hope everyone’s having a GREAT SPRING BREAK! I know I already am (preparing to sleep 12+ hr a day every day this week) k yeah gnight people :P_
