Happy second day of Ally Week everyone! I hope it’s going well for all those participating. Personally, since my GSA is just getting together right now, I will probably end up celebrating Ally Week with them a little late. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t have some Ally Week blogging fun! So I’ll be posting some little facts and tidbits about allies all this week!

Fun Fact #1: Did you know that the first GSA was the idea of an ally? In 1998, a student of Kevin Jennings (the founder of GLSEN) proposed creating a club to promote LGBT inclusiveness to Mr. Jennings, and suggested it be called a Gay-Straight Alliance because she was straight and he was gay. Now, there are over 4,000 GSAs registered in the country!

I am the president of my school’s Gay-Straight alliance. For ally week, we set up a table in our cafeteria where students could sign a pledge and have their photo taken. We thought that, this being our first year doing ally week, it wouldn’t be all that successful. we were wrong. In just four day, 123 people participated. This is a collage of those photographed.

Asian and Pacific Islander LGBTQ+ Resources

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Before we get on with the post, it’s important to note that these are two groups of diverse people who are very unique in many ways! However, in light of the month, (and mainly due to the fact that a lot of the resources available online are for both groups), here is a compilation of resources for Asian and Pacific Islander LGBTQ+ people! ADAPT (formerly Americans Disabled for Accessible Public Transit and Americans Disabled Attendant Programs Today), established in the 1970s in Denver, is a grassroots organization within the disability rights movement that emphasizes direct action to bring greater visibility to the fight for the rights of Americans with disabilities. On July 26, 1990, twenty-six years ago today, as a result of the work of organizations like ADAPT, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
