As a transgender student in a school district with anti-LGBTQ policies, I feel the humiliation and dehumanization of transgender students every day when doing something as simple as using the bathroom. I am signing GLSEN’s Letter to the Next President of the United States because no student should have to walk across campus to use the one gender neutral bathroom at their school, because no student should be alienated by their school for what’s in their pants, and because no student should be treated differently in any way because of who they are or who they love."

Today, The New York Times launched a week-long series called “Transgender Today” with the editorial “The Quest for Transgender Equality”. They are also featuring personal stories “that reflect the strength, diversity and challenges of the community.”
“Being transgender today remains unreasonably and unnecessarily hard. But it is far from hopeless.”

[Gendered] bathrooms in schools also pose difficulty to transgender and gender nonconforming students. GLSEN research shows that nearly two thirds of transgender students avoid school bathrooms because of feeling unsafe or uncomfortable. They risk verbal and physical harassment, no matter which of the two, sex-segregated bathrooms they enter….
The solution here is not a new or radical concept: all schools should have private, gender-neutral bathrooms for any students to use, in the same, normal way that homes have bathrooms for guests to use and many restaurants have bathrooms that are not labeled for the sexes.
A transgender student in Colorado is under attack simply for being herself.
When a small group of parents objected to the student using the girls’ bathroom at school, her school supported her. But the anti-LGBT Pacific Justice Institute stepped in and made up a story that she was harassing girls in the bathroom. Conservative media like Fox News then spread the lies.
According to the school district and fellow students, the accusations are completely false, yet the girl has had to live with the harassment the stories have generated. She has even received death threats simply because she wants to be able to be herself and be safe in school.

Join trans and non-binary activists for a discussion of their experiences in school, at home and in their communities! This Google Hangout, co-hosted by GLSEN and Lambda Legal, will inspire and empower transgender youth to advocate for themselves by both highlighting the realities they and their peers face and also educating about what resources are available should they experience any difficulties at school or elsewhere. The discussion will also help to inform school administrators, teachers, parents and community members about the issues transgender youth face.
We encourage all transgender and non-binary students who have successfully advocated for themselves — or have questions about doing so — to share with us on Twitter before, during and after the event using the hashtag #TransYouthStories.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Before we get on with the post, it’s important to note that these are two groups of diverse people who are very unique in many ways!
