You can tell your story by taking GLSEN’s 2015 National School Climate Survey!
Did you know the majority of LGBT students still report hearing homophobic language in schools? Or that nearly all transgender students surveyed in GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey reported having been verbally harassed at school, and over half said they were physically harassed?
This needs to change.
It is perplexing why a country founded on values of liberty and equality fails to notice the continued disparities faced by LGBT people. To be sure, we have made great strides. But while LGBT characters are increasingly represented on television and film, there is a lack of multidimensionality and diversity in many of these characterizations. And while Pope Francis may take on a “who am I to judge?” attitude toward same-sex marriage, countless faith leaders around the U.S. responded to the federal ruling with condemnation and moral outrage.

When schools teach curricula that include positive representations of LGBT people, history, and events, LGBT students tend to feel safer in school and report less severe victimization according to GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey. We love seeing the lessons promoting respect for all students on Queer Kid Stuff!
A new YouTube channel launched earlier this month is teaching elementary school-aged kids positive lessons about the LGBT community — and it’s one of the most adorable things we’ve ever seen.
Aptly entitled Queer Kid Stuff, the web series (which is created and hosted by Lindsay Amer) was founded as a fun way to help “educate kids on LGBTQ+ topics.”

Schools are slowly becoming safer for LGBT students – but not safe enough. Our latest National School Climate Survey revealed that the majority of LGBT students in middle and high schools hear homophobic language often, face verbal harassment, and experience discrimination at school.
