Writing about genderqueer-identified people can seem grammatically challenging; it is much more challenging to live as a genderqueer-identified person and try to fit into a world that does not seem to make room for you.

#lgbtq #gender #genderqueerAll of us are helping tear down notions of what gender looks like, what gender should be, what gender really is. Some genderqueer people may just be having a good time, being the cool kids for once; or, they may not yet fully understand their gender identity — trans or not — and the freedom to explore gender outwardly is a critical step towards that discovery.
Facebook has just announced that rather than choosing their gender from a drop-down menu, users can now simply fill in the blank to describe their gender identity in their own words.
Alison C.K. Fogarty, a gender identity researcher at Stanford University, said giving users control over the words describing their gender is a significant step in social recognition of a growing trans community, especially coming from the world’s largest social media company.
“People are still fighting to make room for gender identity within the socially constructed binary of male and female,” Fogarty said. “Labels and identities are powerful in that they give a sense of community, a way of articulating one’s experience.”
Gender is so much more than choosing from a list of multiple choices. We’re glad Facebook recognizes it.

GLSEN’s Director of Education and Youth Programs, Jenny Betz, wrote an awesome piece on the importance of LGBT Inclusive Sex Education. The internet (and Tumblr!) have come a long way in helping LGBT youth access relevant, accurate, sex ed information, but there needs to be some major changes in classrooms.
She specifically points out two states:
“Arizona mandates that no school district teach sex ed that ‘portrays homosexuality as a positive alternative life-style’ or suggests that there are ‘safe methods of homosexual sex.’
In Alabama, classes must emphasize, ‘in a factual manner and from a public health perspective,’ that homosexuality is ‘not a lifestyle acceptable to the general public’ and that it is a criminal offense in the state.”
We believe sex education should provide every student has a safe way to increase their awareness, ask questions, and break down stereotypes–gender or otherwise. As Jenny said:
[Education] should not further instill prejudice and misinformation.
